This time, Lake Travis got to celebrate.
Lake Travis blitzed past a depleted LBJ team in overtime Monday to grab a 66-56 regional quarterfinal victory. The win helped the Cavaliers avenge an overtime loss to LBJ in last season's Class 4A, Region IV championship game.
"Beating LBJ is unbelievable," Lake Travis' Zach Karczweski said. "It gives us a big confidence boost going into the regional tournament."
Lake Travis, which never led in regulation, scored the first 13 points of overtime, nine of them at the free throw line. Lake Travis was 11 of 12 from the line in overtime after missing 13 of 31 free throw attempts in regulation.
"We shot free throws real well (in overtime) and they had some key guys foul out, which helped us," Lake Travis point guard David Eads said.
LBJ didn't have much of a chance in overtime. The Jaguars, who opened the fourth quarter with a 10-point lead, had four starters foul out in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, LBJ missed two free throws and its first four field goal attempts before a Cameron Brown basket got LBJ within 64-53.
With its stars on the bench, LBJ was forced to rely on inexperienced reserve s. Senior Elijah Cash, who was unable to make the last shot in regulation, didn't get in the game until the fourth quarter, while LBJ's leading scorer in overtime, Steven Cannon, saw his first bit of action in the extra session.
"It was definitely a disadvantage because (the bench) hadn't played a lot," said Brown, the only Jaguar starter to play in the overtime session. "It's not a bad thing but playoff experience is everything."
Lake Travis, which also had two starters foul out, was led by Cole Vucurevich's 19 points. Eads added 13 points.
LBJ got a game-high 22 from senior Donald Dallas, who picked up his fifth foul during the final minute of regulation.
