Austin’s Sunday reprieve from rain won’t last, forecasters say

Soggy conditions in Central Texas won’t dry up during the work week. Thunderstorms on Saturday dropped as much as 3 inches of rain in the Austin area, closing dozens of roads and knocking out power to hundreds of residents. A second storm system was expected to drench Central Texas again Sunday, prompting the Lower Colorado River Authority to open floodgates at the Buchanan and Tom Miller dams in preparation for a deluge. But the showers mostly dodged the region Sunday as the storm system had broken up by early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Lifeguard Landon Tourne power-washes the rocks at Barton Springs Pool on Sunday afternoon. The pool is closed after Saturday’s heavy rains, the Austin parks department announced Sunday morning. No reopening date was set. photo credit: Ricardo B. Brazziell No rain fell at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport or Camp Mabry, but gauges measured a hundredth of an inch of rainfall at Walnut Creek in East Austin and in Lakeway on Sunday. Scattered showers were expected Sunday evening and early Monday. Although forecasters expect that there will be a brief respite during the day on Monday, Aaron Treadway with the National Weather Service said that rain could resume early Tuesday before a cold front moves through. There will be high chances for showers until Friday, but some areas could be spared. “We could see 1 to 3 inches for the entire period,” Treadway said. “That depends on whether or not you are under one of these bigger thunderstorms that drop torrential rainfall or get some of these showers. It will be highly variable.” Temperatures Sunday barely climbed into the 70s across the region, but warmer days are ahead with highs rising into the low- to mid-80s through Friday. Thursday’s high is expected to be about 78, according to the weather service. Meteorologists say the threat of storms will decrease by next weekend. Employees of GitLab, a global software company, play bubble soccer in Mueller Park on Sunday afternoon under threatening skies and a light drizzle.
