Band of storms forming in Hill Country headed to Austin metro area

10:35 a.m. update: Doppler weather radar indicates a band of storms is forming along a line from Burnet to Blanco and heading northeast into western Travis County. So far, the weather system is mostly heavy rain and lightning, but not producing hail.

9:50 a.m. update: Lightning spotted near the University of Texas prompted sports officials to delay proceedings at the Texas Relays. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service’s Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Camp Swift near Bastrop moving east at 90 mph. The storm was capable of producing dime-size hail and winds of at least 30 mph.

The Statesman’s Ryan Autullo says the Texas Relays will resume running events at 10:20 a.m.

Behind the storm system in Hays and most of Travis County, the clouds have given way to sunshine, adding a dose of April Fool’s Day irony to a morning that began with lightning storms and a blizzard of hail in some locations.

9:05 a.m. update: Until 9:45 a.m. today there is a significant weather advisory for southeastern Travis, central Hays, west central Bastrop and northwestern Caldwell counties, the National Weather Service said.
