UIL golf championships have been big for area players, schools

This week’s Class 5A state golf championship at Morris Williams was filled with noteworthy news, much of which could not fit into our regular coverage. So, here is a look back of some of items you may have missed:

  • Lake Travis became the 15th school to sweep the boys and girls titles in the same year. It’s only the seventh time it has happened in Class 5A, or 4A when that was the state’s highest division, and the Cavs did it in their first year in 5A. The others were Westlake (2010), The Woodlands (2002), San Antonio Churchill (1998 and 1999), and Stafford Dulles (1981 and 1982).

  • It’s difficult to imagine anyone ending their high school career in a better way than Lake Travis senior Klein Klotz. He shot 70-69 — 139 to help the Cavs to the team title, then prevailed in a three-man playoff for second place by making a hole in one on the 191-yard 12th hole, the third hole of the playoff.

  • Klotz was one of four seniors on the Lake Travis boys championship squad, joining Dillon Van Essen, Jake Ezell and Joey Hearn. Junior Andrew Liu completed the lineup. Ezell was a big reason for the Cavs’ victory. After an opening round 80 he fired a 6-under 66 in the final round.

  • After finishing second in state in 2010 and 2011, and third in 2012, the Lake Travis girls claimed the school’s first girls golf title. The winning lineup consisted of seniors Julia Beck and Courtney Ford, junior Emily Gillman, sophomore Ann Parmerter and freshman Kristen Gillman.

  • Westlake senior Sierra Sims fell just short of winning a third straight individual title, but she can still look back on a sensational high school career. She won medalist honors as a sophomore in 2011 when the Chaps took the team title. She won again last year when Westlake was third, and she finished runner-up this year on a team that also was second.

  • Christine Campbell, another Westlake senior, also closed out a noteworthy high school career. She played in the state tournament all of her four years, helping the Chaps to two state titles, a second and a third.

More high school golf: The state championships continue Thursday and Friday with Class A at Lions, 2A at Roy Kizer and 3A at Jimmy Clay.

The Lago Vista boys won the Class A title in 1987. Also in the 2A field is Salado, which has won 13 team titles. The boys have won eight times (1973, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 2008 and 2009); the girls have five titles (1982, 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2010).

Lions Partnership: The Lions Spring Partnership two weeks ago went down to a playoff between the teams of Kody King/Matt Fisher and Mike Allen/Brian Noonan. King and Fisher won on the first hole, the par-4 10th, when Fisher drove to within 10 yards of the green, chipped to three feet and made the birdie.

Oddly, Fisher was the only one of the four in the playoff who has not won an Austin Men’s City Championship. Noonan has won three (2006, 2007 and 2012), Allen one (1987) and King one (2011).

Another playoff: Last weekend’s Horseshoe Bay Invitational was also decided in a playoff too. Jimmy Keener defeated Manny Bhakta on the first hole. The two ended 36-hole regulation play tied at 3-under 141.
